They spoke with us about their experiences and important considerations regarding booking and shipping dangerous goods by air.

Please tell us about yourselves and your role at �ļ�ֱ�� Sweden?��

Christina:��For the past eight years, I have worked as an import and export specialist for Air, Sea, and Rail shipments at our office in Sundsvall.

Caroline:��I have worked as an Air Export Specialist at our Arlanda/Stockholm office since 2017. I have been in the forwarding industry since 2005, handling import and export air consignments.

What are dangerous goods?

Dangerous Goods is the term used for substances and objects that, if not handled properly during transport, can cause harm to people, the environment, or property.

The classification of dangerous goods is based on criteria outlined in the UN model regulations. These goods are then divided into different classes depending on their nature and level of danger.

You are both experts with dangerous goods, primarily by air. What training is required to be able to work with dangerous goods shipments?��

Caroline:��You have to be approved for an IATA DGR course (7.3 Function: Personnel Responsible for Processing or Accepting Dangerous Goods Consignments), where there is a requirement that you attend it every two years to be up to date with the latest rules and regulations.

Christina:��It is good to have attended stage 1 and 2 courses for Lithium batteries.

There are a lot more batteries (for electric cars, hybrid cars, electric bicycles, laptops, mobile phones, cameras, etc.) compared to previously. And many of them are transported by air, so the rules have become much stricter. Did you know, for example, that there is a difference between sending only batteries, batteries packed with equipment, and batteries packed in equipment?

How do you help customers with dangerous goods transportation?��

Caroline: We collaborate with our dangerous goods partner, Dangerous Goods Management (DGM), to assist and advise our clients on how to properly package their goods in accordance with current regulations, as well as identifying necessary documentation.

What would you say is the main difference between handling dangerous goods and non-hazardous goods as a forwarder when it comes to air transportation?

Christiana:��Compliance with IATA's Dangerous Goods Regulation (DGR) is mandatory for air shipments of dangerous goods. This includes following strict guidelines for classification, marking, packaging, labeling, and documentation of hazardous shipments. Additionally, certain states or airlines may have specific restrictions or rules that must be followed. In other words, handling hazardous goods is more complex than handling non-hazardous goods.

What information do you need when contacting you for a dangerous goods transport, and what responsibility does the customer have according to law?��

Christiana:��As the shipper/supplier is always ultimately responsible for their goods, we must be clear about what can and cannot be shipped and how.

Caroline:��When booking a shipment that includes dangerous goods, the customer must provide a "Shippers Declaration for Dangerous Goods" for air transport. This declaration helps us determine the correct pricing and routing based on how the goods are packaged. It's important to note that different rules apply for flights that use passenger aircraft versus freighters, which are known as Cargo Aircraft Only.

What are the risks of transporting dangerous goods by air?��

Caroline:��The properties of dangerous goods are so hazardous that they can jeopardize the aircraft itself and even the safety of individuals on board an aircraft. Some goods may be unable to endure the effects of turbulence and high pressure, making it necessary to pack them in specially approved containers designed for dangerous goods.

Many everyday household items can be classified as dangerous goods for air transportation. What are some examples of these items, and how does �ļ�ֱ�� help ship them?

Christiana:��Some examples of dangerous goods you may not know are nail polish, hair spray and dry shampoo, alcohol, matches/lighters, thermometers, backpacks with built-in chargers, and E-cigarettes…the list goes on.

We collaborate with partners such as DGM to provide guidance on how to ship small quantities of hazardous items as limited or excepted quantities instead of fully regulated dangerous goods. This allows for shipping with exceptions and reduces the labeling and packaging requirements, making it a more cost-effective option than shipping fully regulated dangerous goods.

Caroline: It's worth considering that our smartphones and tablets contain a built-in Lithium battery, which makes them sensitive items. Consequently, flight attendants typically instruct passengers to notify them if such items are dropped between the seats. Dropping a lithium battery on a hard surface may cause the particles to divide and potentially ignite a fire that is incredibly difficult to extinguish. In the end, though, it is the Pilot who ultimately decides which cargo is allowed on their flight.

In his new position, Patrick reports directly to Tomas Sonntag, Regional Executive Vice President, APAC and with a dotted line to Gregor Vrhunc, EVP Global Head Air Freight, as the newest member of the World Airfreight Team (WAT).

Even the most remote areas can’t prevent the �ļ�ֱ�� Worldwide team from meeting delivery deadlines for clients. Case in point: Perth, Australia. ��

Located in Western Australia, Perth is one of the most isolated capital cities in the world. Pre-pandemic, only 20 percent of flights serviced the city. As a result, importing and exporting supplies and other products from Perth requires superior logistics management skills. ��

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Perth’s seclusion became even more detrimental because of border closures. Extreme weather conditions have further complicated matters, with flooding in South Australia washing out more than 186 miles of rail lines used to bring food and other supplies to the West Coast. ��

As borders have begun reopening, a need arose to ensure Western Australia had sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE). A major Perth customer requested �ļ�ֱ�� Australia’s assistance moving nearly 6,000 cartons of PPE from a supplier in Wuhan, China, to Perth, Western Australia. ��

Never one to turn down a logistical challenge, the �ļ�ֱ�� Australia team sought the assistance of their counterparts at �ļ�ֱ�� Shanghai to accomplish the task at hand. Between the two teams, they secured two Boeing 777 aircraft. The aircraft was scheduled to depart three days apart to ensure the product arrived within the requested timeframe. �� ��

�ļ�ֱ�� Shanghai assisted with the coordination with the Wuhan PPE supplier and ensured both B777 charters were maximized with 3,000 cartons per flight. Both charter flights touched down at Perth International Airport at the scheduled time of 7:30 a.m. before transferring to the �ļ�ֱ�� Perth bonded warehouse. The PPE was then reloaded onto pallets and delivered to the customer by 1 p.m. the same day for a quick turnaround.

The oil and gas and renewable energy sectors in China continue to experience sustained and strong growth moving into 2022. In response to this growing market, the �ļ�ֱ�� Energy Solutions team innovates end-to-end solutions for clients within these industries. ��

As part of its commitment to providing the highest level of customer service, the �ļ�ֱ�� Energy Solutions team successfully arranged four chartered flights of chemical goods of Xanthan gum on the urgent request of a client. The December 2021 flights originated in Tianjin, China, with a destination of Saudi Arabia. The �ļ�ֱ�� team was responsible for safely and quickly transporting 384 pallets. ��

It was the quick thinking and fast-acting of the �ļ�ֱ�� China Energy Solution team members that allowed for these flights to advance from a client request to a completed task. Upon notification of the urgent request, the team brainstormed to formulate the best solutions. Careful attention was taken to match the special requirements of the customer with any proposed solution. ��

Since the pandemic began, the pharmaceutical industry has experienced rapid growth. Simultaneously moving charters from Jakarta, Indonesia to Chicago, Illinois (USA) takes solid coordination skills. �ļ�ֱ�� Hong Kong put its expertise to the test in recent weeks via a collaboration with the logistics teams from �ļ�ֱ�� Indonesia and �ļ�ֱ�� USA (Chicago). The task at hand involved moving a tailor-made charter solution for moving ready-made garments between the two countries for a valued client. ��

After much consideration on the best way to move the product, the teams decided to transport via a Boeing 777 commercial freighter. A combination of belly and cabin loading was used to optimize the shipment, which included 3,100 cartons of garments. Configuring the load this way helped prevent the cargo from scattering during transport, which was a requirement of the customer. ��

Since the start of the pandemic, securing fleets and aircrew for commercial freighters can be challenging. With a little brainstorming and ingenuity from the �ļ�ֱ�� Hong Kong, Indonesia, and USA teams, they acquired the charter transport needed to provide a smooth move from the APAC region to the US. ��

Customers can benefit from the solid coordination demonstrated by the �ļ�ֱ�� Hong Kong procurement team. The crew will handle two more charter requests before the end of October and looks forward to serving more customers through its solid coordination and cooperation efforts with �ļ�ֱ�� teams around the globe.

At �ļ�ֱ��, we know people make the difference, so when a customer contacted us needing to move a specialized mining tool from India to Mexico via airfreight, team members across the world collaborated to design a tailor-made solution.

The oversized and overweight tool was too large for regular air freight, weighing over 3,600 Kgs and measuring more than 19.00 CBM, and needed to be moved quickly so that the customer could maintain business continuity. Without it, the customer risked needing to stop operations which could cost them thousands of dollars.

Realizing the time-sensitive nature of the project, �ļ�ֱ�� logistics engineering experts quickly worked to develop a unique multi-modal routing plan that allowed the Out Of Gauge (OOG) piece to be moved from India via Europe to Texas, USA, and to its final destination in Mexico in a very short period of time.

Thanks to the collaboration of our team members, the OOG tool was delivered to the customer in 6 days allowing for complete business continuity.

This 5-day operation from pickup to delivery involved many members of the �ļ�ֱ�� team, including air specialists and import and export specialists. To distribute the heavy load safely, the cargo was divided between three chartered aircraft: a Boeing 777, a Boeing 767-300F, and an Airbus A339-900. As of Monday afternoon, this shipment was in a free trade zone warehouse (FTZ) in Wuxi, China, awaiting outbound bonded clearance. ���ļ�ֱ�� Shanghai received the shipment at the airport warehouse at 2130 Monday. The flight left Tuesday with an ETA of 1600 at Heathrow Airport (LHR). �ļ�ֱ�� delivered the needed materials to the customer, located approximately 150 miles outside of Heathrow Airport (LHR), at 2330 on Tuesday.

SK Group, the 2nd largest group in Korea after Samsung with an annual revenue of $213.6B in 2018, has two arms of pharmaceutical subsidiaries, SK Pharmteco, the pharmaceutical intermediate, and API manufacturer & SK Biopharmaceuticals, the new drug development.

With support from �ļ�ֱ����APAC &���ļ�ֱ�� Worldwide, �ļ�ֱ�� Korea has become a contracted freight forwarding business partner for SK Biotek as of last December, then after months of implementation period, �ļ�ֱ�� has been handling various types of Pharmaceutical export shipments by Air & Ocean to additional International Pharmaceutical companies in Europe.

Due to the nature of the cargo, pharmaceutical products, they must be mostly carried by air freight, using special equipment such as dry ice gel/ ice pack, cool/ reefer truck, temperature-controlled storage, and even RKNs which require thorough knowledge and experience to handle such a commodity properly and in a timely manner.

The RKN e1 is a one pallet size container, based on a second-generation active temperature control system and utilizes compressor cooling and electric heating technology, to meet the requirements of the pharmaceutical industry for smaller air shipments.

The RKN e1 container maintains product temperatures in the +2 to +8 °C range, controlled room temperature (+15 to +25 °C) range, ���ļ�ֱ�� Korea has successfully arranged 11 RKN e1 for its door to door delivery to a Spanish Pharmaceutical consignee with Dap term in March, when the Pandemic was in the peak.

SK Pharmteco’s subsidiary, AMPAC is one of the strategic partners to a U.S. public benefit drug manufacturing corporation, which recently received federal government funding of $354 million for advanced manufacturing of America’s most essential medicines at risk of shortage, including those for the COVID-19 response. With its strategic partners, it has initiated manufacturing chemical precursor ingredients, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and finished dosage forms for over a dozen essential medicines to treat hospitalized patients with COVID-19-related illnesses.

SK Biotek will supply pharmaceutical intermediates to AMPAC and has appointed �ļ�ֱ�� Korea as the logistics provider for this project. The 1st air shipment was exported to AMPAC in California, USA by suing 5 x RKN e 1 in close cooperation with �ļ�ֱ�� San Francisco on June 15th, all 5 x RKNs were successfully delivered to AMPAC on the next day. After the ingredient’s analysis main orders will be placed shortly and �ļ�ֱ�� will continue to handle this business. Next opportunity will be export business out of AMPAC to overseas with the finished products.

The Boing 747-400 departed on Saturday Feb 21 2020 from the Chicago O' Hare International Airport and arrived at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport on Sunday Feb 23rd at 16:51 local time. The plane carried 100 tons of freight, of which 50% were relief goods such as facial masks and disinfectants.
